What should you look for when choosing a slip testing company?
Slip testing is an important component when managing your property’s risk exposure and so is partnering with the right company to service those needs. For over 18 years, I have worked as a floor safety consultant and what I’ve learned is there are a few questions you should ask before choosing a slip test company.
Who will be conducting my slip testing and what is their experience in the floor safety industry?
Slip testing is a very technical field because you are dealing with scientific devices producing COF (Coefficient of Friction) measurements. The measurements collected should be treated with care and displayed within your report for accuracy. It is of great benefit for you as the consumer to deal directly with a professional who has extensive experience in this field as well as court experience because, after all, a slip test report can be used in a lawsuit in order to mitigate punitive damages.
What slip test device do you use to collect your COF data?
There are several devices on the market that can measure slip coefficient well, but what matters most are the current regulatory standards supporting the device that will be collecting your COF measurements. ANSI (American National Standards Institute) and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) are the largest organizations that oversee standards and conformity assessment activities in the United States and currently views the BOT-3000E and British Pendulum Skid Resistance Tester as the preferred slip testing devices.
What kind of slip test reports will I receive?
All slip test reports are not created equal. Depending on how a slip test report is generated could help or harm you in a lawsuit. Its important to ask your provider to see a sample slip test report to make sure all of the necessary information is listed within the report. What is your fee and what are the services provided?
There isn’t an industry standard fee for slip testing making it very important to get multiple RFP’s before making a decision. In addition, all properties are not the same therefore prices may fluctuate depending on a multitude of circumstances.
